Homemade Gluten free Puffy Paint Recipe and free Lincoln Coloring Page

Recently I found this great recipe for homemade puffy paint from  Happy Hooligans.  It was a simple recipe and called for only four ingredients, one of them being self-rising flour.  Since Chuck's allergic to wheat, we only have gluten free baking mix at home.  I was curious whether we could obtain the same results.  Well, after messing around in the kitchen we painted Mr. Lincoln's beard and hair with our very own homemade brown puffy paint.

Four score and seven years, our puffy haired fathers....

Would you like to see how we made our own homemade gluten free puffy paint?  Keep reading to find out!

Ingredients:
  • Gluten free baking mix  (or just plain flour)
  • Baking powder
  • Salt
  • Craft paint (or food coloring)
  • Salt
  • Water

How to make homemade gluten free puffy paint:

Homemade gluten free puffy paint

1.  First, you're going to make a small batch of self-rising flour.  Mix together 1/2 C of gluten free baking mix, 3/4 t of baking powder, and 1/8 t salt.  Store this in a sealed container.

2.  Now you're going to make one color of homemade puffy paint.  (I chose to make brown.)  Mix together:
  • 1 T of your self rising flour  (homemade or you could just get store bought too)
  • A couple of drops of paint (or food coloring)
  • 1 T of salt
  • a little bit of water (start off with 1/4 of a teaspoon and then add more to make a thick liquid)
(Note:  We got a bit excited with the water and added a bit too much.  So be careful!  Also, we only had crazy large Kosher salt at home... so our salt never really dissolved.  Eek!)

3.  Now paint your colors on a piece of nice thick cardstock.  (We used a q-tip to color in Lincoln Coloring Sheet.)

4.  Then, pop your picture in the microwave for about 30 seconds and watch the paint puff.  (I guess it's like you're baking something very thin and small in the microwave, huh?)

Now admittedly, our results were not as nice as the ones from Happy Hooligans or Mommy Labs.  (Definitely check out their lovely creations!)  But it was nice knowing that there was a way we could still do the activity even if we didn't have regular flour at home.

Happy crafting!
