Cereal Box Fireman's Hat (Template included)

Currently Chuck loves pretending to be a fireman.  He tells me that random things are on fire and then sprays them with an imaginary hose to put the fire out.  To help encourage his play, we recently made this fireman's hat out of an old cereal box.

(Of course, we had to make a fireman's hat for his best friend Piggy too!)

Materials Needed to Make a Cereal Box Fireman's Hat:

• Cereal boxes (You only need one to make the hat, but it took me two tries before that to figure out how big to make the hat and cut the holes)
• Scissors
• Paint
• Paint Brushes
• Pen/ Marker
• Black sharpie marker
• Hot glue gun
• Optional:  Mod Podge and sponge brush
• Optional:   Cereal Box Fireman's Hat Template (This hat fit Chuck's head, so it might fit your kid's head too.  You could always just print it out and then base your design off of it.)

How to make a Fireman's hat out of a cereal box:

1.  I traced and cut out this general shape out of one cereal box.  I cut out the inside curve (to the number 1s) first, making sure that the cutout made wasn't too big.  (I didn't want the hat slipping over Chuck's head.)

2.  Then, I folded the front part of the hat down.  (From the number 1 to 1.)

3.  Then, I noticed that the hat would fit better if I made another cut on each side (to the number 2s) and then made another horizontal fold.  This double fold let the hat sit better on Chuck's head.

4.  Then, I cut out a little piece of cardboard to act as the label in front of the hat. 

5.  Chuck and I painted the bottom of the hat white, to help block out the cereal box's initial design.  Once that dried, we painted it over with red.  Then, once the bottom dried, we painted the top with red and the labels white.

6.  Once the paint dried, I drew on the "FD" and the star.  Then, I covered the hat and the label with Mod Podge to protect my paint job.

7.  Once the Mod Podge dried, I hot glued the labels onto the hats. 

And there you have it!  Two cereal box fireman's hats for Chuck and his little fire fighting piggy.
