Kid Science: Make orange soda!

There are so many neat scientific demonstrations out there showing how acids and bases react.  Last year, Chuck and I used vinegar and baking soda to blow up a balloon. Seeing that balloon fill up stayed on my mind for quite some time.  The balloon blew up because of the carbon dioxide released when the acid and base combined.  Carbon dioxide is also what makes soda taste fizzy on your tongue.   So I tried out some kitchen chemistry and created homemade soda, using an acid and base reaction.   

Easy Kid Science:  Let's Make Orange soda!

Now full disclosure:  This soda isn't as tasty as the soda that you buy in stores.  But, it will fizz on your tongue and let us taste an acid and base reaction.   The super neat thing is that you'll only need two ingredients to try it out!

Materials Needed to Make Homemade Fizzy Orange soda:

• Baking Soda
• Measuring Spoons
• Liquid Measuring cup
• Orange juice
• Glass

 

Easy Kid Science:  How to Make Fizzy Orange Soda 

 

1.  Pour 1/2 C of juice into your glass.

2.  Add in 1/8 tsp of baking soda.

3.  Mix the two together and quickly drink.  

This fizzy orange soda won't taste as sweet as normal orange juice and you will definitely feel a fizzing on your tongue.  (The tingling sensation reminded me of Pop Rocks... which makes complete sense because Pop Rocks are fizzy because of carbon dioxide.)
