Easy DIY Kids Spider Costume

We really love reading and it's always fun to create crafts and activities to go along with our favorite books. Today I'm joining forces with other kid bloggers to present a Halloween Read and Play Blog hop! We made a DIY spider costume for our post. It was inspired by a beloved book character, Splat the Cat!

Have you heard of the Splat the Cat Series? We love these books. For Halloween, we read Scaredy-Cat, Splat!

I don't want to ruin the story for you, so here's just a snippet to explain today's craft. Splat the Cat's initial costume gets ruined and his mom has to quickly whip up a homemade spider costume from socks and string.

I love the idea of making something from nothing, so we tried our hand at quickly whipping up a spider costume just like Splat the Cat's mom!

Let's get making!

Materials Needed

Black Stockings
Scissors
Newspaper
Masking Tape
Sharpie Marker
Yarn
Safety Pins (4)

Let's Make a Splat the Cat Spider Costume!

1. Cut your legs off of your black stockings. Then, cut each leg in half so that you have 4 black tubes. Roll up your newspaper and then shove it into your black stocking tubes. Tie off the ends.

2. Now you should have 4 stocking tube legs. Now take the top portion of your pantyhose and then tie the two leg holes up. This will create little ears for your Splat the Cat hat.

3. Doodle some eyes onto masking tape, cut them out, and stick them onto your Splat the Cat hat. (If you read the book, you'll see that Splat's eyes kind of look like this!)

4. Use safety pins to attach your legs to a black shirt. Then, cut out two long piece of yarn. Tie the legs together on each side and tie a loop on the end of the string for the arms to go through. Now your fake spider arms should move whenever your child's arms move!

Tada! It only took a couple of minutes to make and we used materials that we already owned. Chuck LOVED wearing the costume and pretended to be a spider for the rest of the morning!
