Make Candy Mosaic Art with Kids!
It's always special to make art with non-traditional materials. Some of my favorite food-art projects include our colored salt art, tortilla art, gumdrop flowers, cornstarch sidewalk paint, and homemade watercolor paints!
This activity would be a really fun one to do on giant cookies, but since we didn't have any on hand cardboard and aluminum foil did just fine.
I cut out some shapes from cereal boxes and then covered them in aluminum foil in case we wanted to eat our candy off later.
Chuck helped me to dye store-bought icing with food coloring. Then, I stuck his car onto a paper plate and gave him several types of candy to use. I told him that we were going to make mosaics and cover our shapes up with lots of lovely colorful candy.
I also gave Chuck a pair of scissors... because he loves cutting things.
After putting a couple of candy pieces onto his car, he announced that he was done. I really wanted to keep the activity going on for a bit longer, so I encouraged him to work on his art with the following incentives:
- I promised him that he could have 2 pieces of candy when we covered our entire piece of artwork
- I also promised him that he could pour sprinkles over his artwork once he finished
- I also told him that we would have a competition to see who could put more pieces of candy onto their artwork
As you can see, the incentives worked! He happily covered his artwork and then sprinkled a TON of lovely sprinkles over his car and my heart.

Chuck was so proud of his artwork that he wanted to show his father when he came home.
