Spring is here! La la la! Although our current grey skies don't exactly scream "warm, sunny, bursting-with-new-life weather," today's kirigami flower craft certainly does!

How to Fold and Cut Kirigami Flowers

Now, I had a lot of trouble naming this craft.  These flowers kinda felt like origami... and yet they weren't quite origami because I used scissors to make the designs too.  Luckily Mr. Google taught me the term kirigami.  It's a Japanese term that basically describes origami that also involves paper cutting too.  Bingo!  So cool right?

Now, let's make some kirigami flowers!

To make these flowers, you just need a pair of scissors and origami paper.  That's it!

Written Directions for Kirigami Flowers:

1. Select a pretty color of origami paper.
2. Fold it in half diagonally.  (Opening is on top.  I tried to shoot the rest of the photographs in the right orientation.)
3. Fold it in half again vertically (so the right corner now lies on top of the left corner.)
4. Now fold it so that the top corner of the right triangle meets the bottom left corner.  (The center of your origami paper should be the bottom right corner of the triangle.)
5. Rotate your triangle so that the center of your sheet is on the bottom.  Cut out a petal shape by cutting off your two other corners.
6. Now, make cuts like these two types.   For the blue petal, I essentially cut out the center of the origami sheet.  This type of cut will result in Type 1:  Solid Flowers.  For the purple petal, I left the outlines of the petal.  This type of cut results in Type 2:  Lacy Flowers.

Ok.  I hope you have a lot of fun cutting these out.  Honestly, they're kinda addicting to make.... almost like snowflakes!  So you'll soon have a whole garden of lovely, paper flowers!
