Pi Day Inspired String Art Activity

Ah, good old Pi Day.  That special holiday only celebrated by geeky math and pizza lovers.  It's definitely my kind of holiday!  Today I'm adding to our list of easy, low-prep Pi Day Activities with this neat one that combines art and math.  Tada!  We're making some Pi Day inspired String Art!

Yup.  We've done easy Pi Day Preschool Activities, made two pieces of Pi Day Artwork, and made  Pi Day inspired bracelets.  This year I've really been into paper plate crafts and thought... wow.. why not combine Pi and paper plates together?  (Paper plates are round, after all... and pi refers to the relationship between a circle's circumference and diameter... so you see?  It was a match made in math heaven!)

Let's Make some Pi Day String Art!

First, I grabbed a super cheap white paper plate.  Then, I cut out the center circular bit (and saved that for later.)

I took my favorite liquid watercolors and painted circular designs around my paper plate, even painting around the paper plate's circumference.  (Ahh, the circumference!)

Then, I used Sharpie markers to write the digits 0-9 evenly spaced around my inner cut out circle.  (I used my circle cutout to practice first before writing out the digits on the paper plate.)

Then, I hole punched over each digit.

And then, I grabbed some yarn and proceeded to create a string art pattern, guided only by my love for crafting and the digits of Pi!

(Note:  I got pretty far when digits repeated.  Uh oh.  I wasn't sure how to represent that, so I just ended up skipping the repeated digit. But looking back now, I probably could have just looped the string around the inner cutout circle....)

I also ended up taping a pi symbol to my artwork so other people would have some inkling of what I 

was trying to represent.

I hope you have a fun time trying out this activity with your older kiddos.  It would be neat to see how far they could go and what their resulting designs look like!
