So what's the secret to these awesome color changing bracelets?
It's the beads! They look white in room light and then change light when UV rays hit them! Here's what they look like changing colors!
Are you impressed? I sure was.
I never knew these type of color changing beads existed until we went to a local science fair on nano technology. There was a booth were kids made color changing bracelets. All the kids (from preschool to elementary kids) were floored and enthusiastically beading.
(I can't blame them. I wanted to join them too!)
Hmm... but now that I think about it. Color changing beads totally make sense. I used to wear color changing shirts and color changing nail polish in my teens and early twenties. (Ahh, good times.)
Anyway, to make these bracelets, you simply need:
- plastic lacing cord (for young kiddos) or leather cord (if you're working with tweens)
- plastic pony beads
- and these AMAZING color changing beads
Then, make the bracelets (or necklaces) like any other jewelry craft.
Tie a knot to your cord. Give all the children a couple of "magic beads" and pony beads. Have them create a design. Once they're done, knot the other end and tie it around their wrists (or necks). Tell them to go outside and watch them "ooh" and "ahh" as their beads change color in the sun.
Then, give yourself a pat on the back as you explain that the beads change color because of the UV light in the sun. (Yup. A craft AND science? Do a little celebratory dance because you've become da bomb adult.)
(The pastel beads were originally white and then they changed colors in the sun.)
So neat, huh? Love, love, love.
Make them as a play date, summer camp or birthday craft and it'll surely be a it. Guaranteed.
Happy making, friends!
