100 Color Challenge

Ever wonder just how big 100 really is?  Lately my son and I have been talking about numbers.  While small numbers are easy to imagine... large numbers always seem quite vague.  100?  1,000?  1,000,000?  10,000,000?  We just don't have much experience dealing with numbers larger than 20 in the real world.  So I came up with this really easy combination math activity and art activity.  We challenged ourselves to make 100 colors together!

I drew a 10x10 grid on a piece of drawing paper.  Then, we grabbed our liquid watercolors and got to work trying to make 100 colors.

(It was definitely a lot harder than I thought to make 100 different colors, so we just settled on exploring how different colors mixed together and then coloring in the grid.)

Once we finished, it was neat to see what 100 looked like.  My son then added his own squares to the grid, announcing that he now had "101 and 102" colors.

I hope you enjoy trying out this math and art activity with your preschoolers as well.   This activity would go great with reading these 100-theme books:
