Now that we've officially entered summer, trips to the beach are on the horizon. Not sure about you, but my son and I can never resist bringing home a small smooth rock or two from the shore. Over the years we've amassed quite a collection. They're the perfect size and texture to use for play, building, and crafting.
Here are some of
Our Favorite Rockin' Rock Crafts!
(Hee hee hee!)
Today's rock craft is by far the easiest one yet. We're just taking yarn and wrapping them around rocks. Of course, you can just wrap the rocks all willy nilly and get a lovely outcome. Or, you can wrap them with a little more precision to get rocks with yarn that looks like it's been woven or braided on.
Find some smooth, flat, and long-ish rocks. Wash them if needed.
Then, cut a stand of yarn. (I find that multi-colored rainbow yarn works the best because you get a nice gradation of colors.)
(Note: You will use 2 hands to do this... but I needed one hand to take photos so I only show 1 hand.)
Place a strand on top of your rock.
Pull it tightly behind in a horizontal fashion.
Then pull it over your rock to make an "x."
Then pull your yarn behind again.
Then, keep wrapping this same pattern- over, behind, over, behind, etc... Each time move the yarn slightly over from where you previously wrapped. Make sure to keep everything tight!
Keep going!
Then, tie your two ends to the back when you're done.
If you use multi-colored rainbow yarn the colors will change. Or, you could always just tie on new strands of color. (That's what I did for the rainbow one below. But it was tricky hiding my knots behind the rock.)
Hope you have a wonderful time going to the beach, collecting rocks, and trying out this craft too. And if you're looking for even more fun rock crafts, check out some cute rock crafts from my favorite craft bloggers!
