If you want to build a car with your child, you could always get one of those nifty build your own wooden race car kits at the store. I have nothing against those kits (in fact, we've purchased a couple for our eldest).
Our car is not quite as sleek and nifty-looking as the cars you'll get in a kit. But it's unique and completely designed and created by my son and husband.
Oh. And it's free to build.
What? Well, while cleaning out our tool chest and garage, my husband found all these bits and bobs lying around from old wood projects. Then, he and my son worked together one afternoon and used up all the extra pieces to create their very own race car.
They used materials that we already owned, like...
- 2x4 wood cutoffs
- Circle Stickers
- Deck Screws
- Cordless Screwdriver
- Various size screws
- Rubber bands
- Wood Glue
- Rubber grips from curtain rods
- Casters
- L Brackets
- Random hooks
I loved the caster wheels. They move in all directions. Plus, the car can still drive even if it falls on its side while racing. Shnazzy.
:) So go ahead and dig around your garage and tool chest. Who knows what neat-o bits and bobs you'll find!
