While I don't condone violence, I do realize that making toys that shoot, launch, or fly (like this pom pom shooter, car launcher, or this 1 sheet paper kite) are always crowd pleasers. (Plus, they're a great opportunity to slip in some STEAM learning.) So today I'm sharing this cute Ninja Throwing Star Craft. It was super easy to make and kept us relatively sane on a stuck-at-home-going-to-pull-my-hair-out-cleaning-the-pulled-out-puzzles-for-the-eight-time rainy day.

I wish I could claim this craft as my own. However, I cannot. It came from this really neat book ( The Flying Machine Book) that we checked out at the library. So far my son and I made 4 projects together. I really liked this book because all the crafts use materials that you already have around the house. I hate it when I get excited about a craft, only to find out that it requires some special-expensive ingredient/ magical tears of a unicorn.)Ok, let's get crafting!
Materials Needed to Make Cardboard Ninja Throwing Stars
- Cereal Box Cardboard
- Pennies (1 per star)
- Stapler
- Clear Tape
- Pencil/ Pen / Sharpies (Normal markers work fine too, but I just like how crisp my Sharpies make designs look!)
- Scissors
Let's Make Some Throwing Stars!
1. Grab a penny and draw a throwing star shape around the penny. Make sure to round your corners so you don't
2. Cut out your star. Then, use that as a template to trace and cut out a second identical throwing star.
3. Tape the penny in the middle of one star.
4. Staple the other star on top.
(Fun fact, I've had this stapler for 13 years!)
5. Decorate your Ninja Stars.
(This is where my 6-year-old and I disagreed. He cared very little for decorating the stars, but I spent at least 10 minutes doodling and coloring my ninjas. What can I say? I like my cardboard weapons to look cute!)
And that's it!
Throw your ninja stars...
- At toys / non-breakable objects
- At aliens or zombies
- Away from people
- Inside or outside
- Into the recycling bin (once you remove the penny and are all done!)
