How To Regrow Lettuce from a Stump

Have you ever tried growing food from scraps? Did you know that you can grow romaine lettuce... from a stump? It's true! I have a black thumb and yet the kids and I were still able to enjoy this super easy science "gardening" activity.

How to Regrow Lettuce from Scraps:

1. Buy lettuce from the store. Eat your lettuce! Save the stump.
2. Put the stump in a bit of water.
3. Change the water every few days.
4. Watch your lettuce grow!

We've left our lettuce by the windowsill for a couple of weeks now and the tiny leaves just keep growing and growing! (No roots though.) We tried a couple of lettuce leaves and they were good, although slightly bitter.

You'll never get a full head of lettuce again but it is fun to watch plants grow hydroponically. Also, if you want to continue observing how lettuce grows, try sticking the stumps in the dirt. (Spoiler alert- They totally die. We guessed it was because the plant doesn't have any roots?)

Hope you try this out with your kiddos too!

Happy growing, friends!
