Did you know you can carve boats from soap?
Last week during an impromptu playdate, we tried our hand at carving Ivory Soap Boats. This was such an affordable, easy and fun activity that kept two 3rd graders engaged for about 1/2 an hour!
How to Carve Ivory Soap Boats with Kids
How to Carve a Soap Boat:
Unwrap a bar of Ivory Soap.
The soap is so soft that you can use cutlery (spoons + knives) to carve the soap into the shape of a boat.
I let both kids just go at it! Each child took a different approach to their design and it was neat seeing the two final results.
Notes:
- Remind the children that once the soap is broken, it's hard to repair it! (One child went a bit bonkers on the carving and ended up breaking the front of their boat.)
- Soap shavings will get everywhere! If you don't want to make too much of a mess, have them carve over a bowl to catch it. (We just let the soap fly + then swept everything up + wiped everything down later.
Once you're satisfied with your boat shape, try floating them in water afterward!
And if you have extra soap, why not try carving something else from it? Like these cool soap ghosts or skulls?
