1. Zita The Space Girl
This series chronicles Zita's heroic adventures in space.
The books are easy enough for young kids to understand, but also touch upon deeper topics like friendship and forgiveness. Both my preschooler and 3rd grader loved it!
2. Hilda and the Troll
This series describes Hilda's fantastical adventures with enchanted creatures.
The illustrations are super cool and groovy.
This novel was also made into a Netflix series too.
3. Press Start!
This fun series follows the adventures of Super Bunny, a character in a video game!
The art is 8-bit inspired and the books are perfect for kids who love playing video games.
4. Rutabega the Adventure Chef
These graphic novels are a fun mix of recipes and adventures.
Rutabega may be a chef on the search for new and tasty ingredients, but danger and intrigue seem to find him...
5. DC Super Hero Girls
I LOVE how the author reimagined the DC universe with this fun girl-powered twist!
It's got sass and action... and a small bit of romance too...
Does your child love dragons?
Does he or she love the Wings of Fire series?
Well, this is the graphic novel version.
My eldest LOVES fantasy. He just gobbled these up.
They were too difficult for my preschooler.
7. Dog Man
Boy, oh boy. Do I have mixed feelings about this series. On the one hand, both my boys LOOOOVED IT. (And I fully support anything that gets them reading.) On the other hand, my preschooler just can't get enough of the potty humor and now shares potty jokes to EVERYONE he meets. Literally. Everyone. It's enough to drive me bonkers. So read with caution! And prepare for a lot of yuks and discussions about diarrhea...
8. Narwhal: Unicorn of the Sea
Super Cute. Super Sweet. It's the classic hilarious pairing of a sweet and hopeful friend with a grumpy-too-serious friend. We love it! (And honestly, I think everyone needs someone like Narwhal in their life, am I right?)
9. Pashmina
Wow. This graphic novel really hit home. As the child of immigrants, Priyanka's story resonated with me. The author does such a beautiful job weaving together fantasy and a girl's desire to find out where she came from.
10. Secret Coders
Logic puzzles? A mystery? Simple coding? All in a graphic novel? We swoon! We swoon! (My 3rd grader son loved it!)
And by the way, Gene is also the author of the Avatar Graphic Novel... (which we haven't read, so I didn't include here. But if it's anything like the television series, I'm sure it's excellent!)
Ever wonder what lunch ladies do when they're not serving lunch?
Apparently, they're saving the world. This is a hilarious series that had both my preschooler + 3rd grader laughing out loud.
12. Smile
I feel like everyone and their mother has read this novel... and then gobbled Raina's other graphic novels too (Ghosts and Baby-Sitters Club.) She's so good at writing funny and touching tales that perfectly describe kids' experiences growing up. Not recommended for preschoolers.
13. El Deafo
Any book that helps my kids to develop empathy for others is a good book. This novel is funny and honest and we love it. Highly recommend!
14. Loud House
These graphic novels are based on the hit Nickelodeon show. 10 sisters + 1 brother = tons of hijinks and fun!
15. Catstronauts
How do these funny cat astronauts make it to space?
Find out! Super cute and sweet. Both my boys loved it!
And that's it!
Wow. If you're reading this final paragraph, congratulations! You made it!
So, what do you think about this list? What good graphic novels have you read lately? We're always on the lookout for some new favorites.
