Inspired by that Instagram trend years ago, my eldest and I made rainbow grilled cheese sandwiches. They turned out beautiful looking, but I vowed then and there to never dye my food rainbow colors again.
Well, it's been 3 years later and the rainbow food bug has bitten me again. This was our first time baking bread together (with a 3rd grader and a preschooler) and honestly, it wasn't as difficult as I anticipated.
(I'm not sure why, but I pictured my boys to be covered head-to-toe in flour by the end...but surprisingly they remained relatively clean. Their hands were quite sticky and dyed rainbow colors, however .... ;D But the food coloring eventually washed off.)
We followed these directions and used silicone bread baking pans so the two loaves just slid out. The toughest parts of our rainbow baking adventure were getting uniformly bright colors and waiting for the bread to rise. (You have to wait 2 x!)
Here's a picture of our two rainbow loaves after we popped them out of their pans... (One for us and one for our friend.)
As odd as the loaves looked, they made a lovely rainbow design when sliced!
The bread was delicious and quite dense. I'm not sure why but I kept expecting it to be sweet. Maybe the food coloring was playing tricks on my brain?
Overall, it was a good experience, and the boys and I look forward to baking more bread (probably not rainbow-colored) soon!
Let me know if you try making rainbow bread too.
Happy making, friends!
