Creating Vision Boards with Kids

Have you heard of vision boards? They're collages that you make using words and pictures to help you envision what you'd like to happen in your life. Often time we'll talk to our kids about new year's resolutions, but honestly, we all forget what our resolutions are by February.

Two mom friends told me about making vision boards this year and I thought it would be a fun activity for our family to try out. The nicest part about this is that it involves cutting and gluing (which everyone seems to enjoy), and you get to chat with the kids about the fun pictures and words that you cut out. An added bonus? You end up with a lovely visual reminder to hang up. Ours are currently sitting in our crafting room. We'll see if they help us out this year!

Origami Mushroom Wreath

Happy New Year!  Random question- have you seen any mushrooms hanging around?  Nope?  Did you know that some cultures consider mushrooms to be lucky?  Yup.  I read that some people will hang up mushrooms to bring luck and fortune in the New Year.  (Who knew?)

So,  in hopes of bringing a bit of luck to our family (and yours) here's a fun origami craft to ring in 2017.

Light Painting with a Flashlight

Hubby and I love seeing things glow in the dark. We've taken photos with glow sticks (and then cut them up to see what was inside- muah ha ha), made our Christmas lights look like different shapes, and even made glow-in-the dark chalk.

This past Christmas our uncle gave us his old tripod (Thanks Tito Ric!), so hubby wanted to try light painting.  We basically just waved around a flashlight in the air to make lovely "drawings" in the dark.

New Year's Pipe Cleaner Crown and Headband

Are you ready for the new year?

I can't believe that 2014 is right around the corner.  I feel like December just flew by and whoa, now I've gotta make time to reflect on what happened and look forward to life's wonderful new possibilities.

Like last year, hubby, Chuck, and I will be showing our party animal selves.  Oh yes.  We're celebrating the new year in the middle of Times Square  at home.  When the clock strikes midnight Chuck will be sleeping and hubby and I will be sitting in front of the tv, watching the ball drop (and fighting off sleep... )

To help get us into the celebratory mood, I whipped up this sparkly pipe cleaner crown and headband.  (Because nothing says "Celebrate!" like something sparkly and gold, am I right?)

Keep on reading to see how I made these guys:

Make a rattle-drum

Chinese New Year is quickly approaching.  To help get us in the mood, I made this rattle-drum for Baby Chuck using directions I found in a book of crafts. Do you like the black and white?  I chose those two colors to give it a modern look.

Crapty DIY 2013 New Year's Glasses

Every year I keep meaning to get a pair of 20-whatever glasses, but I always forget.  This year, I combined my desire for glasses and crapting by making two pairs of 2013 glasses.  Hubby and I'll be wearing these as we ring in the new year.  (I tried making a tiny pair for Baby Chuck, but he ripped up my initial models.  Maybe next year?)

If you'd like to make your own pair of glasses, you can use the printable below.  I think this would be a fun activity for a party or crafty kids.  I cut the pieces out, traced them onto cereal boxes, cut the shapes out, decorated them, and then taped the pieces together.

And because Baby Chuck went to sleep early tonight, hubby and I had a bit of fun shooting some photos with the glasses.

Let me know if you try making these for yourself. :) I'd love to see photos.
Happy New Year!  See you in 2013.
